Order From Chaos — Fractal Patterns of Light and Water Emerge From Wake Turbulence
Beddington Lake, Maine
A traveling salesman got lost in a rural area and stopped at a farm house to get directions. As he was talking to the farmer, he noticed a pig with a wooden leg. He asked him — How did that pig get the wooden leg? The farmer replied — Well, sir, that is one very special pig. One night a while back we had a fire start over to the barn. And that pig set up a great squealin’ that woke everyone, and by the time we got over there, he done herded all the other animals out of the blaze and saved every last one of ’em! The salesman was impressed — So that was when he lost his leg? Oh Lordy, no — said the farmer — He was fine. Just a little singed is all. Though a little bit after that I was in the woods out back and a black bear snuck up on me and had me pinned up against a tree. And don’t you know that pig was nearby and he came a runnin’ and set on that bear and chased him off. Saved my life! The salesman said — So the bear injured his leg, then? Heck no — said the farmer — Barely a scratch. And what’s more, just a few weeks ago I was mowin’ the south forty and done tipped my tractor into the crick. I was caught under there and the crick was risin’ and I was deathly afraid I was gonna down. But that pig happened along and saw me in trouble and pulled me right outa there by the straps of my overalls. I tell ya what, he done saved my life once agin! Wow, that’s amazing — says the salesman — But how did he get that wooden leg? And the farmer said — Well, a pig like that you don’t eat all at once!
